Challenging perceptions

CLIENT: ALOPECIA UK

Alopecia UK asked us to develop a robust case for support to underpin the charity’s advocacy work and fundraising campaigns. We crafted an evidenced narrative to make the compelling argument that alopecia should never be considered as ‘only hair loss’.

Alopecia UK is the national charity working to improve the lives of those affected by alopecia through support, awareness, and research.

They exist to create a world without alopecia, or a world in which people with alopecia live the life they want with confidence.

The context

Alopecia UK is a national charity that exists to improve the lives of those affected by alopecia through support, awareness and research.

They are the largest alopecia charity in the UK with big ambitions to develop and grow further.  The charity’s vision is a world without alopecia or a world in which people with alopecia live the life they want with confidence.

The charity’s overall research aim is to provide hope and confidence to people with alopecia by funding research into its causes, with the aim of finding treatments, and ultimately, a cure. For too long those with alopecia have had to deal with treatments that work for some and not for others, with no actual cure available.

The challenge

Alopecia is a complex condition, and it was vital to ensure that the case for support we developed challenged perceptions about the impact that living with alopecia has on an individual, their family, and even on the opportunities available to them.

It was crucial to address a misconception that it’s ‘only hair loss’, and to demonstrate the significant impacts of the condition on people’s mental and physical health, relationships, opportunities, and overall quality of life.

This is where Alopecia UK asked Really Good Things, charity communication and fundraising specialists, to develop a robust case for support that could be used to underpin the charity’s future communications strategy, policy work, and for fundraising.

What we did

  • We reviewed the charity’s strongest evidence, impacts, and stories

  • Held team insight sessions to understand the lived experience of alopecia in more detail, as well as the opportunities through research

  • Developed a new case for support and robust evidenced narrative about the wider impact of living with alopecia

  • Supported the charity to apply the narrative to a number of key funding bids

The difference we made

“Sarah from Really Good Things helped us compile a Case for support and bids for both Children in Need and The National Lottery Community Fund.

She helped us think about our key messaging and framing things in a way that would be appealing to funders. We couldn’t have got the bids in without her.”
