Increasing influence

CLIENT: POWER TO CHANGE

Power to Change is a think-do-tank for the growth of the community business sector. We were commissioned to undertake a significant stakeholder engagement and brand perception project to understand current perceptions of community businesses, and how Power to Change could increase its influence.

Power to Change is a think-do-tank that backs community business from the ground up.

The context

Power to Change seeks to tackle some of society’s biggest challenges through community businesses – putting them at the heart of a fair economy. From pubs to libraries, shops to bakeries, and swimming pools to solar farms, community businesses are locally rooted, community-led, and trade for community benefit to make life better for local people.

The organisation exists to back community business from the ground up. They achieve this through building community power, financing the future economy, and taking back the high street.

The challenge

Power to Change commissioned us because they wanted to conduct deep research to understand:

  • Current awareness and perceptions of community businesses among policymakers, funders and key sector organisations

  • Brand awareness and perception of Power to Change

  • The current level of influence they had, and to identify opportunities to increase this influence with key decision makers

What we did

We were commissioned to undertake an extensive research and engagement project to understand the current awareness and perceptions of Power to Change, and of community business. The aim of the project was to provide robust metrics for benchmarking, to help Power to Change understand the influence they have today, and to measure perceptions and engagement against this benchmark in future years.

Our work will inform the future communications strategy of Power to Change and ensure that they have the maximum influence and impact on the community business sector.

The approach we took:

  • We designed a mixed-methods research approach, including a survey, and an in-depth online questionnaire

  • We engaged senior leaders to take part in deep-dive interviews, including policymakers, funders, infrastructure organisations, national and local government, and community businesses

We conducted extensive stakeholder engagement to understand current perceptions and opportunities for Power to Change to increase its influence.
